“I Am Here”… a new vision of disability through art

The Art for All Centre (Falaj), under the umbrella of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, inaugurated the “I Am Here: Redefining Disability in the World of Art” exhibition in collaboration with the Sharjah Museums Authority. Featuring the works of 34 artists, the exhibition is hosted at the Sharjah Art Museum and will run until June 10. Through this showcase, the exhibition offers a distinctive perspective on disability, blending creativity and personal expression to challenge conventional perceptions.

Her Excellency Mona Abdul Karim Al Yafei, Director General of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, emphasized the exhibition’s alignment with the city’s pioneering vision of supporting artists with disabilities and providing them with platforms for artistic expression. She underscored the city’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities in the artistic and cultural realm, expressing pride in organizing an event that embodies this vision.

The “I Am Here: Redefining Disability in the Art World” exhibition aims to shift societal perceptions of disabilities by showcasing the talents of artists with disabilities across various art forms. Al Yafei highlighted the city’s history of utilizing art to serve individuals with disabilities, citing initiatives such as the Emirates Group for Special Art and the establishment of music education programs for those with mental disabilities.

Al Yafei emphasized the city’s belief in the creative abilities of individuals with disabilities and its dedication to their inclusion, empowerment, education, and integration. She invited the community to visit the exhibition, which not only redefines artistic boundaries but also promotes inclusivity in the art world.

Aisha Rashid Dimas, Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority, lauded the exhibition as an embodiment of the Authority’s commitment to inclusivity and community participation. She stressed the positive impact of art as a universal language that transcends barriers and fosters participation and appreciation among diverse audiences.

Dimas highlighted the importance of museums in providing accessible spaces for expression and contemplation, promoting mental and physical well-being. She affirmed the Authority’s dedication to ensuring museum accessibility for individuals with disabilities and facilitating their engagement with cultural heritage.

Muhammad Bakr, Director of the Art for All Centre (Falaj), described the “I Am Here” exhibition as a cultural tribute that aligns with the center’s mission of bridging communication between artists with disabilities and their peers. He emphasized the exhibition’s role in advancing the vision of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, promoting empowerment, integration, and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the field of art and culture.
