Abu Dhabi Food Trails: A Culinary Journey Through Emirati Heritage

“Abu Dhabi’s culinary landscape is a treasure trove of flavors, weaving together Emirati heritage, global influences, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. One of the most exciting ways to explore this vibrant scene is through the Abu Dhabi Food Trails, a series of food walks organized by 421 Arts Campus, an independent platform dedicated to creative practitioners in the UAE. As reported by Khaleej Times, these trails offer a delicious journey into the emirate’s cultural fabric—one bite at a time.

Imagine savoring the creamy, nutty Sudanese foul and falafel at Abul Afwal Cafeteria, where the perfect scoop of bread-soaked foul leaves diners in awe. The trail then leads to Al Dhafra Restaurant, one of Abu Dhabi’s oldest seafood establishments, inaugurated by the late Sheikh Zayed. Here, the highlight is the Emirati minced baby shark dish, Jesheed, served with fragrant rice—a dish rooted in the city’s fishing heritage. As participants learned, baby sharks were once abundant in Abu Dhabi’s coastal waters, becoming a staple in local homes and reflecting the emirate’s historical reliance on the sea.

The food trails don’t stop at savory delights. On March 22, the Lunchbox Classics walk will evoke nostalgia with classic street foods like luqaimat and roasted corn. Luqaimat, the iconic Emirati sweet dumplings, are crunchy on the outside, soft and airy inside, drizzled with date molasses (dibs) and sprinkled with sesame seeds—a perfect ending to any meal. These treats embody the UAE’s culinary legacy, offering a taste of tradition that feels like home.

Mays Albaik, Programs Manager at 421 Arts Campus, emphasizes that food is a gateway to understanding a community’s history and culture. The trails not only connect foodies but also reveal how Abu Dhabi evolved from a desert fishing hub into a world-class city. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, these walks uncover hidden culinary gems and foster a deeper appreciation for Emirati cuisine.

Join the next Abu Dhabi Food Trail to taste baby shark, luqaimat, and more—each bite telling a story of tradition, innovation, and community. It’s an unforgettable way to experience Abu Dhabi’s culinary delights in 2025.”
