Sharjah has unveiled plans for a Sports City stadium and complex in the emirate.
EVERYTHING SHARJAH: Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah has approved the designs and location for the new Sports City in Sharjah.
The city, which will be built at a site selected by the Sharjah Ruler, will feature four sports complexes catering to both team and individual sports.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC), chaired the SEC meeting held at the Sharjah Ruler’s Office.
The SEC reviewed the general plan for the Sharjah Sports City project located in the Central Region, which was approved by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah to serve athletes in all cities and regions of the Emirate of Sharjah. The SEC also reviewed the design of the main stand that will be in the middle of the sports city.
The sports city will be distinguished by its unique location and multiple sports facilities, the implementation of which will take into account environmental aspects and achieving sustainability, enabling all athletes in the region to practice various sports, which will be reflected in the sports movement and its development at the level of the Emirate.

The announcement was made by Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, member of the Executive Council and Head of The Sharjah Department of Public Works (SDPW), during a phone interview on the“Direct Line”programme, broadcast on local radio and television.
Al Suwaidi explained that the Ruler of Sharjah personally sketched the design for the city, which includes a central square intersected by four main roads leading to the city.
These roads are:
- The road from Al Madam.
- The road to Al Badayer.
- The road leading to Mahafiz and Al Bataeh.
- The road from Sharjah Sports City.
At the centre of this main square will be the “Sports City Stadium.”
Al Suwaidi noted that the stadium is the“first nucleus”and phase one of the Sports City project. It has been designed as an architectural icon, embodying the concept of a bird soaring over sand dunes.
The structure consists of two parts: the platform and grandstand, which resemble the undulating sand dunes of the surrounding area, and a large cover in the shape of a bird with outstretched wings.
The color of this cover changes with the time of day – silver in the morning when sunlight reflects off it, and a golden-red hue at night.
The design is environmentally conscious, harmonizing with the natural characteristics of the site and reflecting the attributes of an athlete, akin to the falcon’s keen eyesight, speed, and strength.
Al Suwaidi said: “In accordance with the directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, we will immediately proceed with completing the detailed designs for the Sports City Stadium and commence its construction to ensure it is ready to serve athletes, all clubs in the emirate, and the sports sector as soon as possible.”
The stadium has been designed to meet all the requirements for hosting local, regional, and global events and tournaments.
